RFDR Swapping

Postby crit32566 » Mon Aug 15, 2016 3:48 pm

I am fairly new to critters, but not to critting. I've noticed a good number of RFDR requests in the queue, and wondered if anyone within the last couple of months has had success in getting DR's? I currently have a 6-book series I've been working on for 4 years. The first 3 books are 99% finished and in need of readers. I am a word-for-word reader and a stickler for plotholes/typos/grammar-o's and anything else that sounds like a bad breakfast cereal. I don't mind long stories in scifi or fantasy if they're good. So here's the red hot skinny:

1. Is anyone having success with RFDR's? Testimonials welcome here.
2. Is anyone with an editing eye willing to trade RFDR's with me?
3. If you were willing to trade critter work, my own hopes for a crit-partner would be these:
a. Someone who has done a good deal more than a couple edits to their work.
b. Someone willing to spend time on their work. I devote at least two complete readings to anything I critique.

I have to say, I've read some amazing stories while here so far. Some of them I would expect to rest on my shelf. I know it's not always easy to get collaboration moving between busy people, but if you love a good story as much as I do, effort should be made. If you have answers to any of the numbered questions listed above, even if it's not directly related to working with me, please respond! Thanks.

Hey Joshua,

I haven't had a ton of luck w/ RFDRs myself, but am definitely interested in the swap. I am actually looking to get a small writing group together of dedicated beta readers between the group and I think this would be a great place to start. My own novel, book one of a dark fantasy series, should be finished by end of Oct. I've been on critters for a while now and have a few short stories published. Let me know if you have any interest in getting this going (or at least see if we would be the right fit). My email is HallwayToElsewhere@gmail.com

Anyone else who happens to come across this post, feel free to contact me as well as I'd love to get the writing group going and connect with others dedicated to helping each other's craft.

Huzzah!

I'll be contacting you by that email address, and I'd also like to extend the invitation to other like-minded individuals. I'm just finishing an RFDR request for someone else, complete with notes. A very satisfying experience. I'll be posting a new thread regarding the editor/writer symbiotic relationship, but that's for another time.

To anyone interested in an RFDR swap or in a small writing group, they should respond to HallwayToElsewhere@gmail.com as I will, but they should also post here on this thread to let the Critter-world know that something is up on this thread. For RFDR swap questions or anything else, feel free to contact me at jlaelfreeman@gmail.com.

I'm new to the site, an I'm not a good copy editor. I have readers find things I missed that are glaring obvious once they are pointed out, like missing punctuation or " have be" type mismatches. What I would like is someone who wants to discuss ideas in their story and mine. If anyone is into that, Volcheka1@yahoo.com. I'll read most types of fiction. Porn is out, but mystery, science-fiction, fantasy, political-thrillers, historical novels, I'm willing to give reader feedback on all of those.

Huzzah, indeed!
I'm new to the site as well and have a completed sci-fi novel ready to swap. I'm also interested in joining the writers'/beta readers' group Joshua and Jeffrey mentioned above. I'll respond to HallwayToElsewhere@gmail.com ASAP. Glad I found this thread. Hope everyone on it is doing well.

I just joined this month and working on a 3 book sci fi adventure: The Khyber Chronicles. Two books completed but have not been sent for beta reading, etc. Number 3 is in the starting process.
Coming of age story of Brodee Delgado wanting to leave his terran colony for a hybrid society of Kren and Terran people. Realizing his dream takes courage and determination in a world of conformity. His world is pro-terran and discourages immigration but he wants to see and experience the possibilities that are out there. Genetics is the new currency and he wonders what he has to offer. A chance encounter begins his adventure and puts him in the middle of unsanctioned experiments with an Azizz stardrive and the appearance of a believed threat to a matriarchal society on Kre.

I haven't had any luck with my RFDR request. One person attempted to critique my blurb, but told me it was too short to critique. Um...can't argue with you there. I would love to get in on a swap. I can be soft or hard when it comes to critiquing. I've graded college-level papers and was told to stop making the pages bleed. I'm tough, but thorough, but if you want me to back off and just do a soft edit, I'm more than willing to oblige, though I don't mind the hard crits at all since that is what I would get from random readers. My MS is a dark science fiction with some romance and fantasy elements. One critique partner compared it to Mass Effect (even with the romantic and erotic elements). Anyone interested can hmu at authorbrookehodge@gmail.com and I'll get back to you right away. Take care!

If any of these offers/requests for "dedicated readers" are still open, I'm game, although I have some caveats.

1. I prefer PDF or MS Word docs (Office 97 or Open Office), because plain text files are too irritating. Once I am done reading and have completed my review for your edification, if you decide you wish to explore my critique, I am open to chatting on g-chat. Otherwise, I will destroy my copy of your novel.

2. I read fast but can't type, so figure a turnaround of a few days to a week for an 80-100k word novel, depending on the level of density and readability issues your text has versus the level of real world distraction I have.

3. I have been a proofreader and copy-editor on the other side of the veil. I'd prefer not to do that here, not least because I don't want that to be done for my story at this time. I'm interested in critiquing story elements, identifying plot holes, &c. Well-written prose can hide a multitude of sins, in my opinion, but also will make turnaround that much faster.

4. I'm willing to do swaps - I have a 110k word fantasy novel queued up. If you get done with your review before it is cycled in, I will make sure you get credit.

If these caveats are acceptable, please email me at f.wilhelm.drau@gmail.com and we can get started.

I need to do a swap. I submitted mine to the queue but am wondering if this would be better or quicker. Mine's an epic fantasy horror blend, first part of a trilogy. It needs assessment of story, character, prose, etc and maybe some line editing too but mostly the former, deeper elements. If anyone here is up for a swap, email me at andrewpixton0@gmail.com. Thanks.

Based on the recent requests, I sent emails out asking if you were still interested in an RFDR swap. If anyone reading this is a dedicated writer, with a manuscript that is *truly ready to be read, please contact jlaelfreeman@gmail.com, or HallwayToElsewhere@gmail.com to inquire. Thank you!

J Lael

*Not a first draft. Spell-checked. Read more than once. Time=love. Possibly agonized over, just a bit... ;)
