I think there will continue to be paper copies printed, just as there is still a small market for vinyl LPs. Ebook readers also need to get better at handling more complex books -- i.e. those with lots of images (illustrated kids books, non-fiction with tables, graphs, photos, etc.). I'd also like to see better navigation (easily/quickly flipping through a whole book, not just slow page by page or jumping to a specific place), and so on. They sorta handle that now, but not well. Just a matter of some software upgrades, though.

But why not read LotR on an ereader?

Well on the one hand yeah I too see that as an omen of good news for ebooks this year. On the other hand, I'd be very sad to see hardcopy books go away totally, as difficult as it is to get one published these days. I really hope there's going to be more of a half-and-half end result to this, as opposed to the music/video industry that got wholly swallowed by CDs and DVDs. I know my household still has VHS tapes, but they're harder and harder to get. Somehow thinking of "The Lord of the Rings" on an ereader gives me the willies. Oh sure, I'm looking forward with some hope to my ebook selling well this year, but I also wanted to get to hardcopy someday.

When my ebooks first came out in 1999 from Fiction Works, Hard Shell Word Factory and Diskuspublishing, one of the choices was a CD or Diskette copy to be mailed to you. You had a choice of various formats, too, HTML, PDF, RTF, etc. I still have copies in those formats of all my books.
But most people bought the downloads, so the hard copy versions were discontinued.
But who know? Maybe it's time to bring them back.
