I completely agree that the restrictions are goofy right now! However, sadly, people seem tolerant of this, and of the pricing. I've been conducting a survey on pricing -- what people say they think is a fair price. It's at: http://www.critters.org/surv . I'm told people will tend to actually pay more than what they report is fair, and they report as "fair" numbers that are very close to what ebook prices are set to. The publishers may, alas, have the pricing optimized for their profit, and for ebooks to gain acceptability.

I'd like to see the prices lower, but all I can do about that is price my own ebooks at prices people say are fair. So I used the survey results to set my own ebook pricing.

So the curve as shown could well represent that the growth, under the current conditions, is "good enough" (as annoying as DRM and high prices are) for ebooks to mostly replace paper as the revenue center.

Very interesting, but I'm thinking that curve might not go up that fast unless something is done about a) ebook prices (in some cases more than the paper copy) and b) DRM, especially the device-specific restrictions. Once the providers agree on a format, make it hardware-independent, and stop with the goofy rules about what you can do with the book you bought, then I think the curve might be closer to straight up.
