What do you do for inspiration to write?

Postby crit20242 » Thu Jan 13, 2011 1:24 am

Usually I read. I will bury myself in a series of sci-fi books to get the juices flowing in my creativity.

The best books inspire me to sit down and write...

But then again... so do the worst ones!

I've branched out, I don't get my inspiration from Science Fiction/F these days. I've been reading thrillers like the ones written by James Rollins, and Vince Flynn. These authors have captured my attentions more so than any one in the speculative realm. I don't go into libraries now. I look at the on-line card catalog, order a book, and get it delivered. Or I outright purchase something. I haven't seen anything really good that was Science Fiction in probably 20 years. I've gone back to some of the authors that I've liked from the 50s and 60s.

When I'm in the flow of writing regularly ideas keep coming to me... So I don't have much trouble getting inspiration - but that said, if I don't have quite enough ideas for a story, I like to use random words to trigger further ideas ( http://watchout4snakes.com/CreativityTo ... dPlus.aspx )

excuse me.. I should not write when I'm trying to listen to someone in my office.

S/B so I wrote the scene between 3 combatants. The protagonist knew she needed to kill one guy--as we say in Texas, "he needed killin'". She wasn't sure of the other guy who walked into the scene and seemed ready and willing to kill both protagonist and her prey. ..so it was a three-way stand-off what we call down here a classic Mexican Standoff..cheezy music in the background, unbearable tension building up. Squinty eyes in the bright double suns and alien versions of tumble weeds rumbling down the deserted dusty street. It was great.

OK..that's better. [sigh]

Housework. As in, should I clean the house or write?

You must be making money from writing, then. When I look at my bills, I have motivation to worry about getting a real job.

If I am stumped I take the city bus to my town's downtown terminal. You can get really good ideas for small every day things. Also childhood memories and daily routines can spark something. Reading a crap load of stuff helps. Unemployment is also a good motivator.
